Just read your Rang de Basanti music review. I thought the music wasn't so good. I'll tell you how.
That's one area where Ilaiyaraaja scores over Rahman by a LARGE margin - the background music.
Songs are NOT the only criteria to judge a music director. The BGMs during the movie should suit the movie well. During all those senti scenes, Rahman gave some weird music which spoilt the mood of the movie. Made me LAUGH at times during the senti scenes...:-)
However, Rahman was a big revelation in tamil film music with his new technology and all...And Ilaiyaraaja's style got monotonous. That's why directors started switching to Rahman, just like how directors started switching to IR from MSV during the late 70s...
